I spoke with Mrs Betty Amos this morning (27 December 2006) and she informed me that LTC (Ret) Carl R. Amos, 83 years old is in a nursing home in Texas and doing as well as can be expected. LTC Amos was the previous commander of the 549th QM Co back in 1955 thru 1957 in Japan. He was the OIC when the unit was relocated from southern Kyushu, Japan to Camp Drew, Japan on Northern Honshu north of Tokyo. LTC Amos loved to jump the C-119 airplane "tail gate" and we did that twice a month or more. LTC Amos was replaced by CPT Davis O. Morris as CO.

I am very sad to report to you today the death of MSG Walter W. Williams at his home in Florida. MSG Williams was 89 years old according to my records. This man was a legend when he was in the Army and was known by the nick name "Weeping Willie". He was a WWII VETERAN retiring after only 22 years and living the quiet life in central Florida. We gave him a plaque in 1995 at the reunion here in Fort Bragg. He was a most generous contributor to the reunion fund over the years. There are pictures on the wall of MSG Williams shaking hands with General Gavin and General Westmoreland. I called another old friend of MSG Williams, 1SG Waldo Deason (when you call Deason be prepared to talk awhile) and 1SG Deason was telling me stories on MSG Williams. 1SG Deason is 84 years old. This death was reported by my dear old friend and mentor down in Florida, CW4 Jack Miller, who is planning on attending the reunion at age 80. In the early years of my Warrant career CW4 Miller guided me in troubled times.

Major John Concordia was an outstanding Officer and friend. He was one of the early US Army Riggers for both he and Lt. They were both in the 11th Airborne Division in Japan when I transferred into the 11th in 1947 from the 82nd and was appointed the 11th Airborne Division Parachute Maintenance Officer. They were both very supportive and outstanding mentors for a "newby" who had only packed the then required number of chutes at the WWII Fort Benning Parachute School. John Concordia remained with me until we transferred the 11th Parachute Maintenance Co. to the QMC in 1950. Regards, Tom Cross

I received the following message from Lou Tawney... "Roy I wont be attending the reunion, my back locked up last Thursday and my wife had to call 911 to get me to the hospital. Monday I had a MRI done on my back, neck and my hips, and I need surgery on my left hip, and both my knee replacements need revisions. I'm in bad pain, can't stand or walk for over two-three minutes because of my knees and left hip, and back and neck. And now the back trouble. I'm presently undergoing some physical therapy, but it doesn't seem to be helping, and the effort to get there and back is really hard. The MRI showed postoperative changes with Epidural fibrosis and marked facet degereration with L3-4, C4-5, C5-6, levels with stenosis, and poserior osteophytic spondylotic changes and annular bulge at C3-4, C4-5, C5-6, and C6-7 with advanced levels of spinal stenosis at each of these levels, and bilateral neuroforaminal narrowing. In other words...I'm really screwed up and hurting, and mostly confined to home because when I'm in the lounge chair, that's the only time I'm not in any pain except for the and back and neck. The knee's and hip are really in very bad shape and they want to operate, but I don't want to go through that again, and the doctor said they couldn't guarantee the results would be that great with the advanced case of degenerative arthritis I have. You had better remove my name from any further reunions mailings Roy, I'm now beyond being able to attend them. Lou"

Received the following from Lou Tawney [[[I can't believe Paul is gone Roy, I wish I could have been there with him. He was one of my closest friends, we played baseball togather back in the 549th and he really surprised me how good he played for a guy that hasn't played baseball for such a long time, We had a hell of a great team back in 1962 & 1963 IN SAGAMI DEPOT, we played all Japanese teams, companies, high schools, and a couple of colleges. Paul played shortstop, and like I said he really surprised me at how good he was. The post engineers at the depot replaced all the burned out lights for the team, and then Capt Cuthbertson gave the team off at 3:00PM every afternoon to practice, we went something like 36 wins and only 13 losses, we even got our companies name in the Stars and Stripes newspaper, and in the local Japanese paper after we played in a Japanese Baseball Tournament, and won it, we had a big Japanese Baseball Tournament flag on display in Capt Cutbertson office. The left field fence at the depot was about 330 ft, and all of us players always tried to hit one over the fence, guess who was the first on the team to hit one ovwer the fence? That's right Paul was, and after he came into the dougout, he pulled out his pipe and lit it up and said, hey Lou, that's how you do it!!! :-) Lou]]]

Once again with a sad heart I must inform you of the death of my long time friend CW4 Paul Vaglienti. Paul was 74 years old and had been in frail health for almost one year, but he fought it like a true Airborne Soldier. Paul was the best man at my wedding here in Fort Bragg in 1996. CW4 VAGLIENTI spent his last assignment at Fort Benning and retired in the Columbus area where he lived and worked until his death. CW4 Vaglienti was a true gentleman at all times and he will be missed.

Lots of water has passed under the bridge, and sometimes "over the bridge" during our collective tenure in some of the best military units in the U. S. Military establishment. Sounds odd, coming from a former Marine. Thanks, Roy, and you, too, Brenda, for all your effort in making these reunions possible and fruitful.
